My preschooler seems very independent for their age. They insist on doing everything by themselves, even tasks that seem too difficult for them. Is this normal?
Answer:
It’s completely normal for children between 3-6 years old to begin seeking independence. In fact, it’s a sign of healthy development! During this stage, children are trying to gain a sense of mastery over their environment and abilities. Here’s why independence is key:
Building Confidence: By attempting tasks independently, children are building their confidence and problem-solving skills. Even if they don’t succeed at first, the experience teaches them perseverance.
Fine Motor and Cognitive Growth: As children strive to complete tasks on their own, they are improving fine motor skills and developing better planning and thinking strategies.
Encouraging Exploration: Allowing children to try new things on their own promotes curiosity and exploration, which helps them develop creativity and critical thinking.
While it's important to provide some guidance, celebrating their independence and supporting them in manageable tasks will allow them to thrive.
